What’s the real difference between a human… and an animal?

An animal reacts.
Instinct takes over — fight, flight, impulse, emotion.

A human can do the same.
But when we do, we’re not living as humans — we’re living on instinct.

That’s where daas comes in.

Daas means living with awareness —
that Hashem is with you,
that Hashem runs the world.

Without daas, a person reacts automatically.
With daas, a person pauses.

They step back and say:
“Hashem is with me. Hashem runs the world.
What should I really be doing right now?”

It’s very hard to yell, lash out, or explode
right after those words leave your mouth.

That pause is what separates instinct from intention.
Reaction from choice.
Animal from human.

That pause is daas.
And that pause is where peace begins, eventually to true compassion.

We’re taught that compassion means giving.
Feeling bad. Helping immediately.

But real compassion is more complex than that.

Sometimes, what looks like kindness actually causes harm —
to the person in front of you,
or to others who will be affected by your choice.

Giving without wisdom can enable destruction.
Letting go without boundaries can put others at risk.

That’s not compassion.

True compassion requires discernment —
knowing when to give,
when to hold back,
and what is actually helpful.

Sometimes the most caring thing you can do
is to pause, restrain, and refuse —
not out of cruelty,
but out of responsibility.

Real compassion isn’t about easing your discomfort.
It’s about protecting life, truth, and long-term good.

Why do relationships fall apart?

Usually not because people don’t care —
but because they feel disconnected.

Disconnected from their spouse.
Disconnected from themselves.
And when people feel disconnected,
it’s because they’re disconnected from Hashem.

They’re missing daas.

So what is daas?

Rebbe Nachman teaches in Likkutei Moharan II:7 that daas isn’t knowledge or intelligence —
it’s living with the awareness that Hashem rules the entire universe,
and that He is present in every moment of your life.

As the Torah says:
אַתָּה הָרְאֵתָ לָדַעַת כִּי ה' הוּא הָאֱלֹקִים
“You were shown to know that Hashem is G-d.”

Moshe Rabbeinu revealed this daas to us —
that there is a true Ruler of the world,
and that nothing exists outside of Him.

When daas is missing, a person feels a void.
And that void can unfortunately get filled —
with distractions, with desires, with sins,
with substitutes for real connection.

Breslov Chassidus explains that poverty, broken relationships, and spiritual falling
all come from the same root:
a lack of daas.

Giving a person daas doesn’t judge them —
it returns them to themselves, with true compassion.

And from there,
real connection can begin.
